50-year-old furniture company closing down, no bankruptcy

The furniture sector’s struggles have magnified this year, as longtime product manufacturers in the industry have shut down operations.

Industry headwinds have often been blamed for the distress, including rising labor and product costs driven by inflation, increased interest rates on debt, and reduced customer foot traffic over concerns about the economy.

Home furnishing sales declined in the first quarter

The headwinds were felt at the cash register as consumer spending on home furnishings in the first quarter of 2025 declined about 5% year-over-year, Home Textiles Today reported.

Furniture manufacturer and supplier Progressive Furniture, which was established in 1985, earlier this year said it will close down its business at the end of the year and lay off all 30 of its employees, after its primary supplier in Mexico decided to close its business.

The Claremont, N.C.-based company, which is a subsidiary of ready-to-assemble furniture company Sauder Woodworking, sells its products through Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Amazon, Wayfair, and other furniture retailers.

Also, Kith Furniture, manufacturer of bedroom furniture, entertainment centers, and dining room pieces, in July shut down its Alabama factory, which employed 59 workers.

The Haleyville, Ala.-based furniture company, which was founded in 2011, at one time employed 260 workers at five plants in Alabama.

The case goods furniture manufacturer specialized in bedroom pieces, including headboards, dressers, chests, nightstands, mirrors, metal beds, entertainment consoles, dining tables, accents, and barstools.

Elk Home, a Nesquehoning, Pa.-based furniture and interior lighting manufacturer and supplier to huge retailers, is closing its facilities and liquidating all of its products and assets after over 40 years in business.
