Popular pizza and beer chain files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Pizza and craft beer have been favorites of diners for decades, but both restaurant concepts have faced financial distress lately since the Covid-19 pandemic subsided.

The number of craft brewery operations in the U.S. has declined in the last three years from 9,747 in 2023 to 9,680 in 2024 and falling further to 9,269 by June 2025, the Brewers Association reported.

Craft beer producers have blamed rising costs driven by inflation and tariffs, consumers’ changing attitudes toward drinking alcohol, and high competition for the beer dollar as reasons for their economic challenges.

Tariffs have been the latest problem facing breweries, as many use aluminum for their beer cans and paper products for packaging that can be subject to tariffs.

Smaller pizza chains have also faced economic challenges, as fierce competition from huge chains like Domino’s and Pizza Hut and rising labor and food costs that have forced many of them to close locations and sometimes file for Chapter 11 or Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.

In some cases, chains that have adopted both dining concepts have faced many of the same problems.
