Finding affordable organic and healthy groceries in the U.S. isn’t easy, especially in today’s economy. However, for many shoppers, there is a grocery chain that has been their trusted go-to since its founding in 1955.
With 169 stores in 21 states, Natural Grocers has built a loyal following thanks to its strict quality standards, including products with no artificial flavors, preservatives, or sweeteners.
Now, a community in Austin, Texas, is only days away from losing this rare shopping experience.
Natural Grocers announced it will permanently close its Arbor Walk location at 10515 N Mopac Expy, Austin, TX 78759, on September 30. The store opened in 2010 and became the second store built in the area.
The decision came after an unsuccessful lease renewal with the landlord. While the company expressed disappointment, it emphasized that the closure would allow it to strengthen its presence in other locations.
“While we are disappointed to close our Arbor Walk location due to an unresolved lease renewal, this decision allows us to focus on strengthening our presence across the Austin area and beyond. We remain deeply committed to serving our customers here and are grateful for the support this store has received over the past 15 years,” said Natural Grocers Co-President Kemper Isely in a press release.

A broader retail trend becomes a concern for grocery stores nationwide
Natural Grocers’ latest closure is part of a larger wave of shutdowns across the retail sector. Inflation and shifting consumer habits are pushing shoppers toward online options in search of better prices and convenience.
According to Coresight Research, U.S. store closures are projected to surge to 15,000 in 2025, more than double the 7,325 closures recorded in 2024.
“Last year we saw the highest number of closures since the pandemic,” said Coresight Research CEO Deborah Weinswig. “Retailers that were unable to adapt supply chains and implement technology to cut costs were significantly impacted, and we continue to see a trend of consumers opting for the path of least resistance. Not only do they want the best prices, but they also have no patience for stores that are constantly disorganized, out of stock, and that deliver poor customer service.”
So far this year, Coresight Research has tracked over 2,000 planned closures. Compared to the same period last year, major U.S. retailers have announced 29.6% fewer openings and 334.3% more closures as of January 17, 2025.
