I visited an airport lounge that's so fancy it has a cheesemonger

Home to a dozen lounges offered by credit card companies like American Express  (AXP)  and Chase Sapphire  (JPM) , Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport added one more space to its ranks when the 13,500-square-foot flagship Capital One Lounge first opened its doors to cardholders back in June.

Accessible to those who have a same-day flight out of the terminal and the $395-per-year Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, the new lounge is also a major nod to New York City with a number of partnerships with local restaurants and food chains, a bar menu inspired by neighborhoods like West Village and the Lower East Side and colorful modern art by local creators throughout the space.

The true highlight, however, is the cheesemonger counter I got to experience on a recent tour of the space.

The Capital One Lounge cheese counter features a rotating selection of artisanal cheeses from Murray’s Cheese.

A customized pairing between flights? This one’s for the cheese lovers

Established through a partnership with the local specialty cheese supplier Murray’s Cheese, the Capital One cheese counter located in the back of the lounge allows guests with time to spare between flights — you need at least 45 minutes for the full experience — to schedule a customized session during which a cheese expert puts together a curated board of artisanal cheeses matched with jams and other condiments, charcuterie and wine pairings.

Cheese has always been my thing. I have a notebook in which I write down names of rare cheeses I try on my travels and, on a restaurant menu, the cheese board is always the first pick over other appetizers or dessert. A gourmet cheese counter is my happy place and the thought that the experience of chatting about softs and semi-hards with a cheesemonger could be done at an airport left me with a dose of both skepticism and excitement.

When you walk in at your reserved time (travelers can reserve when they come into the lounge or at any point by coming up to the cheesemonger counter and seeing what slots are available), a cheese expert begins by chatting with you about your tastes and guiding you to select some from a rotating offering 10 artisanal cheeses.

I went with hard-to-find foreign cheeses like the Italian Moliterno al Tartufo and the closer-to-home Jasper Hill Bayley Hazen Blue from Vermont because I don’t believe any plate is complete without some strong-flavored blue cheese.

Another fun discovery was the Meredith Dairy marinated blend of goat and sheep cheese from Australia that was so good I made a note to pick some up for my own fridge next time I’m cheese shopping.

My FOMO and desire to try everything led to an overflowing charcuterie plate.

Other lounge features in a nod to NYC: a neighborhood bar, grab-and-go bodega counter and lots of art

Condiment pairings like quince paste and matcha jam also added the perfect touch that I would not have thought to include on my own and, overall, the entire experience was one of the most luxurious I’ve ever had in an airport terminal. Guests who do not have time for the full tasting can also ask the cheesemonger to put together a small tasting plate.

The new lounge has a number of other features that visitors who are from or just love NYC are sure to enjoy: a The Bodega section with classic counter sandwiches like a bagel with different types of cream cheese or a bacon-egg-and-cheese in the morning and Reuben in the afternoon and coffee through a partnership with Bean & Bean, private work and meeting rooms designed to look like a trendy Midtown office and shower suites that are much roomier than the ones in a typical NYC apartment.

The cheesemonger counter, however, won over my heart in a way that few other lounge perks have before. Frequent flyers with premium credit cards and airline status often have a number of top-notch lounges to choose from, but the cheese counter is sure to make some travelers with a weakness for all things cultured milk sign up for the Venture X Rewards credit card.
